I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted about rug hooking……

Had a few of the girls over to hook……

and eat…..

We had the grilled hearts of Romaine that I talked about HERE,

topped with grilled chicken, feta or bleu cheese, craisins, almonds

and dressing. On mine I tried this Maple Fig dressing….

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!

Sandy is working on some cute flip-flops…..

Ebay Renee is hooking some stars…..

Dulcy of Dulcy’s Doorstep has started a new piece…..looks like a little cottage….

Sheri of Shabby Sheep is working on a purse…..

Kelly is working on binding…..

….and I’m still working on the Redbud runner….

Of course we had a little vino after dinner and got to hooking…..

Even Lonnie came and hung out with us….

For dessert I made this super easy strawberry

shortcake on a stick…..

Just alternate strawberries and chunks of angel food

cake on skewers and then dip it in whipped cream or use the

spray on kind. (freeze your cake first….it will be easier

to cut into chunks)

magazine last night at Barnes and Noble…..

…..from the size of the picture I was looking at,

I thought that part of this was rug hooked.

However, once I got home and googled the

artist, Troy Emery, I found that it is made of pom

poms…..still…..fascinating!

Troy Emery is an artist who lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. He graduated from a Bachelor of Fine Art (hons) at the Hobart School of Art, University of Tasmania in 2005. Troy completed a Masters of Fine Art at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney in 2010.

Emery’s art practice is an ongoing project of producing a series of artworks that investigate decoration and the animal form and the aesthetics of craft associated with natural history. In his sculpture practice, taxidermy foam bodies are covered in bright polyester pompoms and craft textiles such as tassle fringing. The artworks, non-descript predator animals with their playfully colourful pelts, become hyper exotic specimens in a menagerie of art / animal objects.

I enjoy the physicality of thick paint and use knives to smear on one wet layer over another or to excavate through existing layers.
Although I strive for a certain ‘visual plausibility’ in my work, representational accuracy is not my prime objective.
The most enigmatic and interesting qualities particular to painting, have to do with the transformation of pigment in paste to an image on canvas.
I am, therefore seeking to retain some visual evidence of the process used in making the image as a subtext for reading or interpreting it.

I fell in love with the ancient medium of encaustic painting in 2002. Previously an acrylic painter I was very unhappy with the flatness of the medium. I loved the depth and colour of oil, but found the messiness and long drying time cumbersome. The encaustic medium became the perfect solution to my creative dilemma. Wax and oil mixed together provide me with the vibrancy of colour inherent of oil, unbelievable texture, combined with the quickness of drying that suits my impatient temperament. Once the wax cools, the medium is dry to touch within seconds.

Currently my muse is the Canadian landscape. The vast fields, forests and lakescapes of Canada provide endless inspiration. Although traditional in subject manner my approach is that of simplicity. I believe strongly that a painting should depict the act of seeing, not the object seen. I offer through my paintings an atmospheric suggestion of possibility or the probability of the moment. It is what I don’t depict, the parts I leave out that is sometimes the most important element of my work. These ‘openings’ invite the viewer to participate by joining the colours and images with their own imagination.

I often paint from memory, as the restrictions of the medium do not allow for plein air painting. Imprinted in my memory are the changing colours of the seasons, the glistening of the sun on the lake’s surface, the starkness of the birch tree’s bark. I have an acute visual memory for colours and their combinations, which I feel is the key to my work.

Well, that’s a good thing in my case! 

As for the “sewing story”…….

I went to the fabric store, bought some black linen,

brought it home and got out all my “tools” to make pockets

for the back of my garden rugs, which would then house

this piece of wood…..one piece of wood on the top, one piece of

wood on the bottom, to weight the rug.

I measured, I measured again, I cut, I sewed, I swore, I sewed

some more.  I hand stitched the pocket onto the back of one

of the rugs….one irritating stitch at a time. I stitched, I stuck

myself, I bled, I persevered and I got the frickin’

pocket sewn onto the back of one of the garden rugs.

I threaded the piece of wood through the pocket and I hung it against

the wall to see how it was looking before I sewed on the

pocket on the bottom edge of the rug.

The pocket with the wood in it, made the rug pucker and it just

looked BAD…..I tried not to cry over all the time I had spent

doing all of this…..I bit my lip…..perhaps if I just sew the piece of

wood directly onto the back of the rug on the bottom, I can save

myself a lot of time and see if this is going to look any better

once the rug is weighted at the bottom.

I get the bottom piece stitched on and hold the rug up to the wall…..

The top STILL puckers…even with the weight of the wood along the bottom.

Sewing that piece of wood directly to the rug was

so easy……and I’ve been making this waaaay

too hard!

I got out my little scissors…..I snipped and snipped

and snipped some more…..ahhhh, the sheer pleasure

of pulling out all of those tiny irritating threads that

I had stitched so carefully one by one, to stitch on the

100% linen pocket……

gone

done

finito!

Now I was like a woman possessed!

I sewed and I sewed and I sewed….but this time it was

different……

Me, the needle and the fishing line were as one!

I had the piece of wood at the top stitched directly to the rug

.

.

.

I placed it against the wall……

.

.

.

it didn’t pucker!

(Insert singing of angels)

I hope to have these “installed” over the holiday

weekend!

I’d love to hear your questions and comments about

this process. I’ve worked tirelessly with a framer

who is quite knowledgeable about the archival process.

Many things were taken into consideration and I

hope to discuss some of those things in some of my

Ah, the carpet tacking strip question/statement…….

Yes, the archival framer and I talked about this quite a bit……

He was horrified to learn that this is such a common method of

hanging rugs….

The carpet tacking strips will play h*ll with your rugs over the long term…

The nails are not galvanized and will rust….

Plus the sharp nails and nail edges cut at the fibers of the rug…..

The wood is not sealed and the acids from the wood will also eat away at the wool fibers…..

Kind of reminds me of this……

Have I hung rugs using carpet tack strip…….yes

Do I have any rugs currently hung using carpet tack strip…..yes

Am I searching for a better method…..yes

So what started all of this experimentation?

I wanted a way to hang my rugs with just a few nails in the wall,

where I could take the rugs down and they would also be suitable

for hanging in gallery showings.

I’ve only done two showings and once the rugs are there it is a

nightmare to figure out how to hang the rugs.

Galleries don’t exactly want you nailing carpet tacking strips to their walls.

He (the framer) had me use the thicker wood strips to keep the rug from hanging flush

to the wall (I requested a method where the rugs would hang flush to the wall)…..when it

hangs flush, it easily traps moisture, which can also be damaging to the rug AND the wall….

in the form of moisture and mold.  When the rug is hung a bit away from the wall it lets air

circulate around the front and the back of the rug.

For most rugs, you would probably not need the wood along the bottom

of the rug as well, however, for these particular rugs…..they had lots of

embellishing which needed to be weighted at the bottom to have the rugs

hang correctly.

In the future we will also be experimenting with Velcro and perhaps an innovate

way to hang smaller rugs with galvanized or stainless steel wire…..I’ll let you know

how these come along as I work on them.

We put so much time and effort into our rugs….I think it’s time we start thinking more

about how we hang them as well.

The hot water heater is out

how does that happen? I have no idea….it’s an old house…

I don’t have a clue what this is, but it looks like little doors

The new stuff in boxes

Here is the fencing that hides the pool filter and the a/c

See how the a/c sits on the other side of the pool filter?  Well, here is

the old a/c partially taken apart…..so far the fence has not had to

come down.

I’m off work, but pretty much stuck at home having to quarantine

the dogs to smaller quarters while the work is being done.

Therefore, today I’ve decided I will finish the book I’ve started

and try to get a little hooking done on the Redbud Runner.

Later today I’m heading out to get an air-brushed tan…..my 25 year

high school reunion is on Saturday,

but there is a casual get together on Friday night.  So far this year I’ve managed

to get a farmer’s tan, so I need a little evening up in the tan department…..

plus the lower parts of my legs seem to never get tan unless I just bake myself

and I’m sooo beyond baking

myself in the sun these days.

Wonder if people will think I’ve changed?

(junior year, played snare drum in an all girls Scottish drum and bugle

corp, “The Highlanders”.  This was taken at the Rolla St. Pat’s parade.

I remember because the Clydesdale was from a Anheuser Busch float)

I went from K-12 with a LOT of people and many others just for the 4 years

that we were together in high school…..can’t wait!
